Clarendon Central Park Becomes a Hub of Community Activity

Creating Opportunities for Communities

Built around a War Memorial dedicated to citizens from the area who gave their lives in wartime, Clarendon Central Park has become an important element of the surrounding community in Arlington, Virginia. Host to a variety of events as well as a hub of unofficial activity, the landmark highlights what it can mean for space to become an important element of an entire community.

The Clarendon War Memorial

Dedicated to the memory of those who served in World War I, the Clarendon War Memorial was put up by the American Legion and honors Arlington citizens who died in combat. Created in the early 1930s, it has moved to multiple locations throughout the neighborhood but has remained in Clarendon Circle since 1986. That stability enabled multiple features to be built around it in a way that has come to define Clarendon Central Park.

Walking paths and landscaped greenery make up the majority of Clarendon Central Park. Information that further details and highlights the legacy associated with the Clarendon War Memorial are contained on a series of markers. These displays were developed to document the impacts of war on the local community.

Host to a seasonal farmers market while also serving as a concert venue, the space holds a variety of organized events and impromptu community gatherings throughout the year. Featuring a water fountain and numerous places to gather, Clarendon Central Park has been able to cultivate activity across the community in ways that are as unique as they are important in a space that might otherwise be utilized in a totally different manner.

Creating Opportunities for Communities

The small Clarendon Circle space that defines Clarendon Central Park is the result of three main streets coming together, giving it a unique triangle shape. This kind of odd shape often results in an area that is misused or forgotten, but the monuments and landmarks of Clarendon Central Park highlight the opportunities that can be enabled when such features are used to define the space.
