There are numerous notable monuments located throughout Vicksburg, Mississippi. The largest is undoubtedly the Self-Guided Driving Tour at Vicksburg National Military Park, but the Vicksburg Riverfront Murals and Catfish Row Children’s Art Park are also especially notable. However, these monuments are just a few of the obscure and outstanding monuments that are spread across the city.
The Vicksburg Heritage Walking Trails allows visitors to immerse themselves in the history of Vicksburg by strolling through five different routes. These routes feature 35 markers placed throughout the downtown and historic districts. The trails also have a direct connection to the Vicksburg National Military Park, highlighting what it can mean for attractions to cultivate a sense of community.
Funded by a Lower Mississippi Delta initiative grant, the city of Vicksburg also provided a match of in-kind labor to fund the creation of these trails. A full brochure of the Walking Trails is readily available.
The Heritage Walk exposes visitors to various sites and locations that are historically significant to the city and region. Amongst these sites are memorials like the one dedicated to Vicksburg-Warren County, which commemorates the residents of Vicksburg-Warren County who were killed or missing in World War I. It also includes the Bloom Fountain, which has been an attraction for the city since 1926.
Vicksburg is known as the “key to the south”, and that moniker has been able to define a contemporary identity for the entire city. Various establishments have embraced this identity, while the numerous Heritage Walking Trails are defined by symbols that visitors and residents can recognize. Specific walking routes include the Heritage Route, the Court House Route, the Springfield Route, and the Downtown Route.
These are just a few of the obscure and outstanding monuments and examples of identity that have come to define the contemporary city of Vicksburg. By cultivating this sense of history, Vicksburg has been able to highlight what it means to connect the past and future of an entire city for the benefit of the region and beyond.
