Located in the heart of Salt Lake City, Utah, City Creek Center is the retail centerpiece of one of the nation’s largest mixed-use downtown redevelopment projects. Featuring a retractable glass roof, a creek that runs through the property and a pedestrian skybridge, the site has cultivated an identity that has impacted the culture and economy of the entire city.
Connecting Multiple Eras of Salt Lake City
For many decades, the Crossroads Plaza Mall and the ZCMI Center Mall were shopping centers that resided on the other side of Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) consolidated control of both these malls in 2003 and redeveloped the area to create the City Creek Center. It thematically connects to a mountain stream that served as the city’s primary water supply until 1882. The City Creek still flows from City Creek Canyon and through Salt Lake City.
City Creek Center features 700,000 feet of mixed use residential, office and retail space with an open-air design. Multi-level sidewalks feature six total acres of green space, fountains, and a stream. The space also recognizes the history of the area, with markers that call out the history of the space as well as the buildings that used to reside in it.
The City Creek identity has also been utilized by numerous businesses located across the location. These businesses use the City Creek Center identity to cultivate a sense of connection for both residents and visitors.
Numerous stores and brands anchor City Creek Center, offering more than 100 retail businesses and restaurants in a casual, pedestrian-friendly environment. This combo has ensured that both residents and visitors can connect with an identity that is tied to the past and future of the city.
A Landmark of Salt Lake City
Various pieces of public art including seagull statues that are connected to the history of the LDS Church as well as sculptures like “Stream of Life”, which commemorates the state’s wildlife and depicts several animals, are located across the space. These pieces personify a connection to the culture of Salt Lake City that is tied to the identity of City Creek Center. Doing so has provided economic benefit stakeholders while also opening up opportunities that span the entire community.
