Monumentous World: The Obscure and Outstanding Monuments in Salt Lake City, Utah

There are both notable and obscure monuments located all across Salt Lake City, Utah. From Temple Square to the Gilgal Sculpture Park, the collection of landmarks that fill the city have helped define to the local community in a way that resonates in the present and future. Numerous smaller monuments showcase what this impact can mean on multiple levels.

The Mormon Battalion Monument commemorates the sacrifices made by 500 Mormon pioneer volunteers who joined the U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War. Dedicated in 1927, it chronicles the distinct periods of the Battalion’s history from the Enlistment to the Discovery of Gold in California to the Arrival of the Pueblo Detachment at the Capitol.

Located in front of the historic Tribune Building and the Galina Perova Gallery, the Great Salt Lake City Station features a marker that celebrates the Centennial of the Pony Express. Erected in 1931 by Pony Express National Trail Association & Utah Pioneer Trails and Landmarks Association, this marker features reliefs that celebrates the history of the Pony Express in a way that is as distinct as it is notable.

The Doll and Dare” sculpture was created by Dennis Smith in 1978. Located within Liberty Park, it depicts two distinct figure groups. In one, a young girl stands on a pedestal holding a doll. On the other, two young boys pull one another up onto the pedestal. The sculpture has has a poem that connects these pieces to the fabric of life.

With a history that stretches back to the early pioneer days, Salt Lake City features numerous markers and monuments that are connected to the early days pf the city and state. Markers like the “Walker’s Brothers” celebrate the creation of the first retail and wholesale sot ere in Salt Lake City, but many others similarly highlight the incredibly history and legacy of the entire region.
