The Nevada State Capitol Complex resides in the heart of Carson City, Nevada. Featuring a variety of landmarks set amidst the State Capitol, Legislative Building, Supreme Court, and State Library and Archives, this collective landmark highlights what it can mean to transform an otherwise empty administrative center into space that celebrates the legacy of an entire region.
Honoring Nevada’s Most Important Pioneers
The Nevada State Capitol Complex is defined by the State Capitol building itself, which was completed in 1871. Its silver-colored dome and Alaskan marble features make it distinct amongst other capitals, but the various monuments that are located across the grounds make the site a true landmark.
Nevada’s most important pioneers are honored across the state’s capital with numerous bronze sculptures. One of the larger ones depicts Abraham Curry, who many consider to be the father of Carson City. A bronze plaque on the base of the piece says that Curry “accomplished more in his 15-year residence than most men hope to do in a lifetime.” Nearby is a sculpture of Adolph Sutro, who engineered and constructed Sutro Tunnel, which is considered one of the major engineering marvels of the 19th century. It depicts him holding a pick-axe over his head with both hands.
Arguably the most prominent sculpture is the one depicting Kit Carson in buckskin garb riding a horse. The landmark has been installed on a base inscribed with a marker that details his life as well as two maps of Nevada showing the trails that Carson defined on his journeys. Other monuments have been added over the years, including the Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and a representation of activist Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins that was placed inside the State Capitol in 2005.
The campus of the Nevada State Capitol Complex is wide open, allowing audiences to experience the space on multiple levels.
