Pobednik (The Victor) Monument Becomes an Icon of Belgrade and Means of Identity for Serbia

A Significant Representation of Serbian History, Culture and Legacy

Pobednik, known in English as “The Victor,” is a monument that overlooks the city of Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. Residing within the footprint of the Belgrade Fortress, the piece has become one of the most recognizable landmarks of Belgrade and Serbia as a whole, showcasing what it can mean for an iconic landmark to become a powerful means of identity.

Honoring Serbian Victory

Originally conceived as a larger monument to commemorate Serbia’s success in the First Balkan War, the Pobednik sculpture was intended to be surrounded by twenty bronze masks and rest on a five-stage pillar that symbolized freedom from five centuries of slavery under Turks. The construction of the monument was awarded to the famous Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrovic without architectural competition.

Meštrovic began work on the piece in 1913 but the completion of the landmark was interrupted by the outbreak of World War I. The piece was shipped out of Belgrade for casting which is why it was saved from destruction. It arrived back in Belgrade in 1923 but was not erected until 1928. The finalized piece was dedicated to commemorate Serbia’s victory over the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Empires during the Balkan Wars and the First World War.

Pobednik rises 14 meters into the air and is defined by a nude, male figure cast in bronze holding a falcon and a sword, the symbols of peace and war. The figure itself stands on a stone pedestal that overlooks the confluence of rivers Sava and Danube.

Designated as a cultural heritage property in 1992, Pobednik has become one of the most recognized and photographed visual symbols of Belgrade. Featured in everything from promotional guides to maps to merchandise, Pobednik is visible from every important spot in the city, further highlighting what it can mean for a landmark to become an essential means of connection for both residents and visitors.

A Significant Representation of Serbian History, Culture and Legacy

As a symbol of freedom from Ottoman domination and victory in World War I, the Pobednik statue has become a vital historical and cultural landmark for Belgrade and Serbia, generating substantial direct and indirect revenue for the city and nation.
