The New Jersey Korean War Veterans Memorial is Equal Parts Pride and Legacy

Honoring the Victims and Veterans of the Korean War

Located along the Boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the New Jersey Korean War Memorial remembers and honors all of the people from New Jersey who served in the conflict. Designed to showcase the pride, dedication and legacy of all those who served, the monument connects audiences to people and conflict in a way that resonates across the eras.

Honoring the Victims and Veterans of the Korean War

Established in 2000 in honor of all victims and veterans of the Korean War in 1950, the New Jersey Korean War Memorial features sculptures and monuments by J. Tom Carrillo and Thomas Jay Warren that were designed at heroic proportions, representing the servicemen and women who fought in Korea. Numerous notable features define the experiences that audiences can have across the landmark.

The most prominent element of the memorial is the 12-foot tall “Mourning Soldier” who is clutching several dog tags in remembrance of his lost comrades. A group of soldiers under fire emerges through a sheet of water just to the left of the sculpture.

Beneath the eternal flame is a granite wall that features the engraved names of 822 soldiers, airmen, sailors and marines from New Jersey who lost their lives or went missing during the Korean War. Winners of the Congressional Medal of Honor have a marker that specifically mentioned their contributions to the conflict.

Built in honor of all those from the state who served with courage, dignity, and patriotism in the Armed Forces of The United States of America during the Korean War, the entire piece collectively honors the 191,000 New Jerseyans who served in the conflict. This message as well as the experiences that people can have with each element of the memorial are available to audiences who happen to be strolling down the Boardwalk or who came specifically to visit the memorial. These connections highlight the possibilities around the type of engagement that memorials can enable in the present and for the future.
