Pioneer Courage Park Highlights the Spirit of Nebraska Settlers

Celebrating the Legacy of Nebraska’s Pioneer Story

Pioneer Courage Park, located in downtown Omaha, Nebraska, features the Pioneer Courage sculpture series of statues that depict larger-than-life pioneers making their way into the area for settlement. Like other sculpture series that illustrate historical events, Pioneer Courage encourages audiences to both envision and experience what the people being represented in these pieces went through. In telling the story of a wagon train that is traveling across the area, the city of Omaha has created a powerful link to the past that has proven to be a powerful draw for visitors and residents to enable a sense of community that also helps to personify the identity of the entire state.

Honoring the Pioneers Who Laid the Foundations of the United States

More than 600,000 people crossed Nebraska over a two-decade period in the mid-1800s. To tell the story of the opening of the West from multiple perspectives, First National Bank hired landscape architect Jim Reeves to design the space. With more than 2,500 tons of limestone comprising 125 truckloads, Pioneer Courage and Spirit of Nebraska’s Wilderness were transformed into two connecting sculpture gardens that are amongst the largest in the world.

To both depict and represent these the trials and tribulations of these pioneers, sculptors Blair Buswell and Edward Fraughton created a series of statues that tell the story of a wagon train traveling across the area. Beginning at 14th and Capitol and ending near the First National Building a few blocks away, the statues in Pioneer College Park depict pioneers, covered wagons, oxen, horses, mules and more to highlight the courage and spirit of the people who first traversed these lands as they head into the unknown with little more than their dreams and aspirations. Pioneer Courage Park memorializes the countless thousands who forged their way west to define the American dream. It shows what it meant for people to truly experience the West for the first time, and how that experience carries into the present day.

Each piece is approximately 1.25 times life-size and there are numerous distinctive pieces in the series, including the trail boss. Waving his hat in the air, he signals to others that everything is safe and they can continue moving forward. Other pieces depict everything grom a group of settler women to a man’s efforts to get a wagon out of the mud. Additionally, a Native American sentinel atop a horse was one of several depicting Native Americans that were added to the series. Further phases are planned to be completed in the future.

Open to the public at all times and free to enter, these bronze sculptures adorn the surrounding buildings and street signs, becoming fully integrated into the area. That’s just one of the ways that Pioneer Courage Park has been able to create a notable and positive impact on the economy and culture of Omaha as a whole.

A Gateway into Omaha’s Central Business District

Pioneer Courage Park is at the core of the Downtown Omaha district and forms an important part of many walking tours throughout the area. The direct connection to the Spirit of Nebraska’s Wilderness sculpture series has allowed both to become essential elements of the city that pull in residents and visitors. Owned by First National Bank, these installations further showcase how businesses can be directly tied to the community and support the embodiment of an identity for an entire region.

For both residents and visitors, numerous events take place each weekend in Omaha, some of which occur at or around Pioneer Courage Park. In providing both with an important place to congregate, Pioneer Courage Park has become an essential landmark of Omaha. Doing so has tied the community together while giving the city a notable attraction that appears on numerous lists of things to do in Omaha.

Omaha’s history can be described as a series of pioneering stories and experiences, many of which are depicted in the sculptures throughout Pioneer Courage Park. In showcasing the history and spirit of the area, Pioneer Courage Park has been able to highlight a legacy that connects the past of the region to the future of Omaha.
