Serving as the state of Pennsylvania’s Medal of Honor Memorial, Soldier’s Grove has become the most significant memorial in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. This four-acre setup was set aside in 1785 through the original town plan for the hoped-for establishment of Harrisburg as the state capital, showcasing how a memorial can impact the past, present and future of an entire community.
Established as the Soldiers’ and Sailors Grove
Officially named Soldiers’ and Sailors Grove, what has become known as Solider’s Grove is a tree-lined mall behind the state capitol building in Harrisburg. The park defines the layout of the original Capitol Complex and was designed to serve as a memorial to all Pennsylvanians who have served in the U. S. armed forces. It lists the names of each recipient, including those from the Civil War.
Ribbon-like bands represent various conflicts along with the names of each Congressional Medal of Honor winner for that conflict from Pennsylvania. Additionally, various trees have been planted in living memory to Pennsylvania’s sons and daughters who served in the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, the American Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. A historical marker also commemorates the United States Colored Troops Grand Review.
