Bicentennial Square Fulfills a Vision for Downtown Concord

Creating a Legacy of and for Concord

Being purposefully located in the central business district has allowed Bicentennial Square to become a hub of activity in the downtown area of Concord, New Hampshire. This location along with the distinct landmarks and monuments it contains have enabled residents to use it as a place to take a break while visitors can stop by to enjoy a day of shopping, creating a new attraction that has benefited the city and community in multiple ways.

Conceived of as a “Pocket Park” for Concord

Originally designed in 1976, what would become Bicentennial Square was conceived and constructed by the city of Concord as a downtown “pocket park” to spur economic development. It was envisioned as an oasis for shoppers, workers and visitors to the city’s center. This vision for the space was fully realized in 2007 with an initiative that was focused on the renovation of the space for a new generation.

Bicentennial Square has been further connected to the space with the inclusion of a waterfall, New Hampshire greenery and stonework as well as a “history trail” that runs through the square, reflecting points in Concord’s history for over 300 years. Students who were engaged in studying Concord’s history developed the artwork for each granite tile.

The positive impact and new opportunities for engagement that Bicentennial Square has created extends to how various businesses have been able to incorporate the identity of Bicentennial Square into their brand. This ranges from Bicentennial Square Counseling Associates to the way in which the space is highlighted on city maps and markers.

A vision to create a space that would stimulate the economy but also reflect the culture and setting of New Hampshire has provided stakeholders and the city of Concord with a new monument that will continue to positively influence the community in countless ways.

Creating a Legacy of and for Concord

The current Bicentennial Square has been realized in the image of a natural New Hampshire environment while also celebrating the natural history and culture of the region. Doing so highlights what’s possible when a vision to utilize space that would otherwise be plain or ordinary is acted upon.
